About
Dr Jessica Priebe is an art historian and lecturer in generative AI art, blockchain and metaverse curation at the National Art School and a special advisor in emerging technologies at the Museum of Contemporary Art. A researcher with RMIT's Blockchain Innovation Hub, Jessica is exploring the impact of generative AI and decentralised technologies in primary, secondary and tertiary art education. This research is based on her work developing education extension programs in schools and cultural institutions from kindergarten through to adulthood. At the National Art School, Jessica teaches with an AI and Web3-enabled curriculum, the first of its kind for an Australian art institution.

Case Study: Communicating the Arts, National Gallery Singapore 2023
In this interactive Metaverse immersion, participants curated a special CTA virtual exhibition using AI artworks they created during the session. Their works were inspired by the ideas and themes of the conference and serve as a visual record of these conversations and key learnings. Together we explored different techniques for generating and remixing AI art and developed strategies for securing the digital provenance of our collection using blockchain technology. We considered a variety of approaches to curating exhibitions on decentralized platforms and preserving cultural memory on-chain. The workshop concluded with participants taking a virtual walk through the exhibition using their guest avatars. Attendees received a digital souvenir of the workshop in the form of a Proof of Attendance Protocol (POAP).
School Metaverse Program
Overview:
In this interactive program, students create AI-generated artwork for a virtual exhibition in a custom-built metaverse gallery. Using their guest avatars, students visit the exhibition and interact with artworks made during the workshop. This experience aims to promote a deeper understanding of AI’s potential as a tool for artistic expression and showcase new and innovative ways to display art in the virtual realm. Through engaging discussions and hands-on exploration, students critically examine the creative affordances, challenges and ethical considerations of these technologies.
What is a School Metaverse?
A school metaverse is a virtual 3D environment designed specifically for educational purposes, where students, teachers, and the wider school community can interact, learn, collaborate and showcase student work and school archival material in a digital space. The immersive nature of an education metaverse can make learning more interactive and engaging for students. Students can explore virtual environments, participate in simulations and engage with digital content (including their own) in ways that expand their learning beyond a traditional classroom setting.

Sydney Grammar School Edgecliff
AI Art and Metaverse Exhibition
Curated by Dr Jessica Priebe
Over 2.5 weeks, Dr Priebe worked with the Grammar K-6 student cohort to create a school metaverse exhibition inspired by their term 1 unit on Surrealism.
After exploring the fundamentals of generative AI and the metaverse, the students experimented with text-to-image AI generators. They were asked to create 3 works for the exhibition, each exploring a different aspect of human-machine creativity and collaboration:
-
A work on paper inspired by the themes and techniques of the Surrealists.
-
An AI remix of their original artwork using the AI platform.
-
A 100% AI-generated work using Surrealist-themed text prompts and filters.
